妻が育ち、父が三十年の時を刻んできた昭和の木造住宅。その記憶を慈しみながら、親子二世代が新たな時を紡ぐためのリノベーション計画である。既存の住居は、内廊下によって南北が分断され、キッチンは北端に孤立する典型的な昭和住宅の間取りであった。本計画では、住まいの中心にキッチン、ダイニング、リビングを集約。それらを一続きの「土間」で繋ぐことで、家族の気配が自然に溶け合う一体感のある空間を計画した。

建物の南北には深い軒を新設し、暮らしの舞台を豊かな屋外空間へと拡張した。 南側の軒下は、ダイニングから延長するように広がり、柔らかな太陽の反射光を浴びながら人々が集う憩いの場となる。 一方、北側にはアウトドアキッチンを設け、畑の恵みをそのままに調理できる、土仕事と直結した実用的な軒下空間とした。

機能面では、最新の住宅設備を導入する一方で、「火」を暮らしの真ん中に置いた、根源的な豊かさを取り入れている。 囲炉裏や薪ストーブ、屋外のかまど、そして薪で沸かす風呂。これらに屋根上の太陽熱温水器や天水貯水槽を組み合わせたハイブリッドな設計により、万が一インフラが遮断された際にも、自立して変わらぬ日常を送り続けることが可能となる。

A Showa-era wooden residence, enriched by thirty years of a father’s life and the memories of his daughter’s upbringing, finds its rebirth. This renovation is a delicate act of weaving together the legacy of the past with the unfolding lives of two generations. The original structure followed a typical Showa-period layout, where a rigid internal corridor bisected the house and left the kitchen isolated at the northern periphery. This plan dissolves those boundaries by centralizing the kitchen, dining, and living areas at the heart of the home, interconnecting them through a continuous “Doma” (earthen floor) to foster a natural fluidity where the presence of the family dissolves into a single, unified atmosphere.

To the north and south, deep newly-crafted eaves extend the living stage into the landscape. The south wing acts as a luminous extension of the dining room, where soft, reflected sunlight creates a sanctuary for communal gathering, while the north wing serves as a pragmatic outdoor kitchen directly integrated with the earth, allowing the harvest from the family garden to be prepared in situ—a space where labor and living harmoniously intersect.

While integrating modern functionality, the design restores a “primitive richness” by returning fire to the center of daily life. Through the inclusion of an Irori (sunken hearth), a wood-burning stove, an outdoor Kamado (clay oven), and a wood-fired bath, the home regains a tactile connection to the elements. Combined with rooftop solar thermal collectors and rainwater harvesting systems, this hybrid infrastructure ensures a resilient autonomy. Even if modern lifelines are severed, the quiet rhythm of daily life remains unshaken, sustained by the enduring wisdom of the home.
